Roman Catholic Archbishop. Rojas served as the first Archbishop of Panama from May 9, 1926 until his death. Born in Costa Rica, he was raised in El Salvador. He spoke Spanish, English, French and German, but failed to fulfill educations in business, law, and medicine, where he then turned to the seminary. He was ordained into the priesthood on November 22, 1882, Congregation of the Mission. After some time in Colombia, he established a mission at Gorgona to minister the work camps of the Canal Zone and the surrounding natives. (Later, this mission was to be submerged beneath Gatun Lake.) He was consecrated bishop in August 1912. When the liberal party took over that year, President Belisario Porras cut off government funding of the seminary and mission. Rojas excommunicated him. He was a flexible leader necessary for a changing Panama and worked in cooperation with American priests to best serve the needs of the Canal Zone due the shortage of funds. Panama became an archdiocese in 1925, and he was was elevated to archbishop.
