U.S. Senator. Graduating from the literary department of the University of Georgia, in 1859, from its law department in 1860, he was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Atlanta, Georgia. During the Civil War, he served as a Captain adjutant of the 9th Georgia Regiment, Army of Northern Virginia and in the Provisional Army of the Confederacy. After the war, he resumed the practice of law and was a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives, (1871-86). In 1894, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served until death at age 74, Bacon County, Georgia, is named in his honor.
