U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1837, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1839 and commenced to practice law in Athens, Georgia. He was secretary of the Georgia State Senate in 1842, served in the Georgia State House of Representatives (1845-49) and was judge of the Georgia Superior Court (1846-57). In 1857, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1861. During the Civil War, he served as judge advocate on the staff of Confederate General Stonewall Jackson (1861-65). After the war, he practiced law and was a justice of the Georgia State Supreme Court (1875-79). In 1880, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Georgia State Supreme Court and served until his death.
