US Congressman. He received an academic education, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1849, then moved to Monterey, California and practiced law. He was Monterey District Attorney, a member of the California State House of Representatives, served in the California State Senate (1856-57) and was California State Treasurer. Moving to Virginia City, Nevada, in 1864, he continued the practice of law and was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth and Fortieth Congresses, serving from 1865 to 1869. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he retired to California and lived until his death at age 45.
