Congressman. Born in Buckfield, Maine. Virgil attended the Hebron Academy, and Colby College. He was a graduate from Union College, in New York, in 1827. Virgil studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1830 and commenced practice in Buckfield, Maine. He was the assistant secretary of the Maine senate in 1831. A member of the State house of representatives from 1832 to 1837 and elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Timothy J. Carter. He was also reelected to the Twenty-sixth Congress and served from May, 1838, to March, 1841. Virgil was a unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1840. He was a member of the State Senate in 1842 and 1843, and he served part of the time as President Pro Tempore and as Acting Governor of the State. Virgil was a United States marshal for the district of Maine from 1844 to 1848, and special mail agent for New England in 1853, he was appointed naval storekeeper at Kittery Navy Yard in 1856. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1852 and 1872. Virgil died in Paris, Oxford County, Maine. He was 67 years old at the time of his death.
