Civil War Confederate Army Officer, US Congressman. A lawyer and probate judge, he enlisted in the Confederate Army at the start of the Civil War, rising from Private to Lieutenant Colonel of the 29th Mississippi Infantry regiment. He was elected as a Democrat to represent Mississippi's 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1885 to 1891.
