U.S. Congressman. Immigrating with his parents to the United States in 1836, he attended Northfield Academy, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1852 and commenced to practice law in Northfield, Vermont. He was district attorney for Washington County, (1857-58) and during the Civil War, served as a Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Vermont Volunteers, Union Army. After the war, he was a member of the Vermont State House of Representatives, (1869-71). In 1875, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1883. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his legal practice until 1895 and later died in retirement.
