US Congressman. Born in Washington, Kentucky, he moved with his parents to Ohio in 1808, then relocated to Indiana, in 1821. There he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1826 and commenced the practice law in Rushville, Indiana. He was a prosecuting attorney (1831-35), Secretary of State of Indiana (1836-40) and a member of the Indiana State House of Representatives, (1829-32, 1841-43). In 1843, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth Congress, serving till 1845, when appointed Second Assistant Postmaster General by President Polk, serving (1845-49). He was again elected to the Thirty-first Congress, serving (1849-51). An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he was chief editor of the Indianapolis Sentinel (1850-55), plus as special agent of the Post Office Department for Indiana and Illinois, from 1853 until his death near Indianapolis, Indiana.
