Spanish-American War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Sandnes, Norway, he served in the United States Navy during the War with Spain as a Chief Machinist on board the torpedo boat "USS Winslow". He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Cardenas, Cuba, on May 11, 1898. His citation reads "Showing great presence of mind, Johnsen turned off the steam from the engine which had been wrecked by a shell bursting in the cylinder." His Medal was awarded to him on September 3, 1898.
