U.S. Senator, U.S. Congressman, U.S. Cabinet Member. Educated in Teche Country Louisiana, he studied law, admitted to the bar in 1828 and commenced to practice law in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was a member of the Florida State House of Representatives when elected as a Whig to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Alexander Mouton, serving (1842-43) and elected as a Whig to the Thirty-first Congress, serving (1849-50). In 1850, President Millard Fillmore appointed him the 22nd Secretary of War, serving until 1853. During the Civil War, he was a delegate from Louisiana to the Provisional Confederate Congress, in 1861 and a delegate to the First and Second Confederate Congresses, (1862-64). After the war, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 73.
