Pastor Lyle Steenis, of Bethel Tabernacle, recruited ex-drug-addict Breck Stevens in 1971 to be the church's evangelistic liaison to the "hippies." When Pastor Steenis was killed in a 1972 plane crash, Pastor Breck Stevens led the church for 14 years until his own death in 1987.
