Maine Governor, U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Bowdoin College, in 1909, from the law department of Harvard University, in 1913, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Portland, Maine. He was a member of the Portland school committee, (1915-23), a member of the Maine State House of Representatives, (1917-18) and served as a Captain in the 3rd Infantry, Maine National Guard. He was again a member of the Maine State House of Representatives, (1921- 23) and a member of the Maine State Senate, (1923-25). In 1925, he was elected as a Republican the 54th Governor of Maine, serving until 1929. He was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-fourth, Seventy-fifth and Seventy-sixth Congresses, serving (1935-41), then elected as a Republican to the United States, serving (1941-52). After leaving politics, he continued to be active in many conservative organizations until his death from cancer at age 73.
