U.S. Congressman. He attended Broomfield Academy, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Norridgewock, Maine, in 1853. He was clerk of the judicial courts in Somerset County, (1857-60) a member of the Maine State House of Representatives, in 1856, served in the Maine State Senate, (1868-70) and a member of the executive council of Maine, in 1874. In 1877, he was elected as Republican to the Forty-fifth, Forty-sixth, and Forty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1883. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he continued practicing until his death.
