Arthur Houston King passed away on August 28, 2002 at home with family in South Mills. He was born in Burrville, Morgan County, Tennessee to the late William Finis King and Rhoda Belle York King on February 28, 1925. He grew up in Banner Springs, Fentress County, Tennessee, the place he dearly loved and fondly remembered until his passing.
Mr. King retired from the U. S. Navy as a Senior Chief Boatswain's Mate, having served his country for 26 years. During his Navy career, Senior Chief King saw action in the Pacific Theatre in World War II, during which his ship, the USS Mahan, was destroyed by attacking enemy aircraft. He was rescued by a nearby ship and continued to see action in the war. Mr. King also saw action during the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and his ship was part of the blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
After retirement from active duty, Mr. King worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for several years, before finally retiring to delight full-time in his gardening and his eight grandchildren.
Mr. King is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, the former Marjorie Bernice Stinson of South Mills, son Arthur Dale King and wife Terry of Portsmouth, Virginia, son Richard Darrel King and wife Chris of Rising Sun, Maryland, daughter Phyllis Ann King of Hammond, Louisiana, and son David Scott King and wife Judy of South Mills.
Funeral services were held August 31, 2002 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
