North Dakota Governor. Employed as a printer and journalist, he moved to Mandan, North Dakota, in 1881. There he worked in real estate and was the Morton County Treasurer, (1885-87) and the North Dakota State Auditor, (1895-96). In 1897, he was elected as a Republican the 5th Governor of North Dakota, serving until his death from tuberculosis at age 39. During his tenure, a general revenue bill was sanctioned and a railway regulation law was authorized. He was also the first North Dakota Governor, to pass away while in office.
