Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. He served during the Civil War first as Colonel and commander of the 5th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 43rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and distinguished services at the Battles of Williamsburg, Golding's Farm, Va., and Antietam, Md". He was elected as a Republican to represent Wisconsin's 3rd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1863 to 1871.
