U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He attended Elmira Academy, in 1838, was employed in government surveying until 1844, when he engaged in the real estate business, banking in Chicago and was clerk of Cook County, Illinois, (1853-61). Then he was engaged in the wholesale dry goods business, a member of the Illinois State board of equalization in 1867, chairman of the Board of Supervisors of Cook County in 1868 and a national-bank examiner in 1869. In 1871, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses, presented credentials as a Representative-elect to the Forty-fourth Congress, serving until 1876. He them resumed his previous business pursuits, was elected to the Forty-seventh Congress, serving (1881-63). Declining to be a candidate for reelection, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John A. Logan, serving (1887-91). Not a candidate for reelection, he was chairman of the Committee on Expenditures of Public Money and resumed his previous business pursuits until his death at age 80.
