Major James J. McGauley, DSN 1404, was commissioned as a Police Officer on 05/08/1950. After the academy he was assigned to the following Districts and Divisions throughout his career. They were the Central District, Secret Service Division, 1St, Mobile Reserve, 3Rd, 4Th, 2Nd, Bureau of Field Operations, 6Th, Intelligence Division, Assistant Chief of Police, and the Bureau of Administration. He was promoted to Captain on 06/17/1979, and Major on 1/22/1984. During his career he was awarded 2 Letters of mention from the department. When he retired on 09/13/1988 he had 38.35 years of service to the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department. He was also a veteran of the United States Navy and attained the rank of 2Nd Class Petty Officer.

Major McGauley served the St. Louis Police Department for over 38 years. He thoroughly enjoyed his retirement, spending time with family and golfing.
