U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1854 and practiced law in Lexington, Kentucky. During the Civil War, he served as a Captain assistant adjutant general in the Confederate Army, assigned to duty as commissioner of exchange of prisoners under the cartel. After the war, he settled in Missouri and became a successful farmer. In 1879, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-sixth Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1895. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death. Hatch County Missouri is named in his honor.
