US Congressman. Born in San Francisco, California, he graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1940, studied at the Hastings College of Law and was admitted to the bar in 1943. During World War II, he served in the US Navy and after the war established a successful private law practice in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was a member of the Michigan Law Revision Commission (1968-76) and was prosecuting attorney for Kent County, Michigan, (1975-76). In 1977, he was elected as a Republican to the Ninety-fifth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1985. Not a candidate for reelection, he served on the Michigan House Select Committee on Assassinations until he retired. He died of cancer at his home in Algoma Township, Michigan, at age 83.
