U.S. Senator. He graduated from Louisiana State University in 1941 and from its law school in 1942, admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserves. In 1948, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving 1948-87. Not seeking reelection, he practiced law until his death from heart failure.
