U.S. Congressman. He attended Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, then moved to Oxford, Michigan, in 1856, taught school, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law Flint, Michigan, in 1858. He was a member of the board of education, a member of the board of aldermen, (1862-67) and Mayor of Flint, (1873-74). In 1875, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth Congress, serving until 1877. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law, was a temporarily justice of the Michigan Supreme Court in 1892, president of the Michigan State board of law examiners and a special assistant United States attorney for the Chinese and opium smuggling cases in Oregon, (1893-96). Returning to Michigan, he lived in retirement until his death at age 65.
