British Royalty. Duke of Clarence. Born two months prematurely at Windsor, Albert Victor Christian Edward was the eldest son of HRH Edward and HRH Alexandra, Prince and Princess of Wales and grandson of Queen Victoria. He was known to his family as Eddy. By early childhood it was apparent that Eddy was of limited intellect. He was considered very backward, and had an extremely short attention span. Very few complimentary adjectives can be found tied to Eddy's name, instead, dull, apathetic, irresponsible, and dissolute seem to have been used quite often. He was, however, very devoted to his younger brother, Prince George, who was the only one who seemed able to arouse him from his lethargic and hedonistic behavior. Eddy and George served as naval cadets on HMS Bacchante until 1883, and while George went on to school, Eddy, who had shown no ability as a student, joined the Tenth Hussars Cavalry Regiment in 1885 which did nothing to halt his dissolution. In an effort to curb his less than acceptable behaviors; in 1891 an engagement was arranged between Princess May of Teck and Eddy, and a wedding date of February 1892 set. At Sandringham House in Norfolk, however, during his birthday week celebrations, Eddy fell seriously ill. When it became clear that the prince would not recover, his family held vigil in his bedroom for more than seven hours before he rallied to ask "Who is that?" repeating the question until succumbing to pneumonia a short time later at age 28. His death left his brother, Prince George, heir to the throne. Sadly, outside of his family, the overall reaction to his death was nothing short of relief due to the widespread opinion that he would have been an absolutely unsuitable king. Since his death, inevitable rumors and conspiracy theories suggesting that he had actually died of a morphine overdose, or that he was otherwise poisoned arose. There has never been any evidence to substantiate such rumors. Despite the Princess of Wales' wish that Eddy be interred at Sandringham beside his infant brother; the Prince of Wales insisted his son be laid to rest at Windsor. His funeral, however, was conducted with music of his mother's choosing.
