U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Williston Academy, in 1910, from the law school of the University of Notre Dame, in 1913, was admitted to the bar in 1916 and commenced to practice law in Springfield, Massachusetts. He served in the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1917-19) and was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, (1924, 28). In 1930, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-first Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William K. Kaynor, reelected to the Seventy-second, Seventy-third, and Seventy-fourth Congresses, serving until 1937. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was appointed presiding justice of the district court of Springfield, Massachusetts and served until his retirement in 1949.
