Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 48th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant conduct at the assault on Fort Wagner, South Carolina, July 18, 1863, and for meritorious services generally".
