Musician. He was a singer, songwriter, guitarist and one of the pioneers of reggae music. With Bob Marley, he formed the influential reggae group, The Wailers in 1963 and co-wrote many of the band's hits such as "Get Up, Stand Up" (1973). In 1975, he pursued a solo career and made numerous concert appearances in the United States, Europe and appeared with Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones) as a musical guest on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" in 1980. He recorded for various record labels with solo albums including: "Legalize It" (1976), "Equal Rights" (1977), "Bush Doctor" (1978), "Mystic Man" (1979), "Wanted Dread & Alive" (1981), "Mama Africa" (1983) and "No Nuclear War" (1987). On the evening of September 11, 1987, he was shot and killed in his home in Barbican, St. Andrew, Jamaica, under mysterious circumstances.
