US Congressman. He was the foreman of the New York Evening Post, when he established the Freeman’s Journal in 1808 and served as editor. New York Governor Clinton appointed him a Colonel in the State militia and he served as division inspector on the staff of the commander in chief. He was also Postmaster of Cooperstown, New York, (1833-37). In 1837, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1841. Not a candidate for renomination, he resumed his former newspaper pursuits and served as president of the Bank of Cooperstown.
