U.S. Congressman. Educated in private schools, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1835 and began a law practice in Wheeling, Virginia. In addition to his law firm, he became successful with his father and brothers, in real estate and personal property. Entering politics, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth, Twenty-seventh, and Twenty-eighth Congresses, serving (1839-45). After leaving Congress, he served as a member of the Virginia State Senate, (1853-56). During that time, he served on the Committee on Roads and Canals, which legislation passed a bill in 1854, which authorized a bridge across the Ohio River, in Ohio County, West Virginia. Retiring from politics, he resumed the practice of law until his death from tuberculosis.
