U.S. Congressman. He was in the trade as a tailor when he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1834 and commenced to practice law in Bellefontaine, Ohio. He was a member of the Ohio State Senate (1841-43) and delegate to the state constitutional convention in 1850. In 1851, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-second Congress, served until 1853, elected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress, reelected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Congresses, serving (1855-61). After leaving Congress, he was elected the 6th Lieutenant Governor of Ohio, serving (1862-64). Retiring from politics, he relocated to West Virginia and continued the practice of law until his death.
