U.S. Congressman. Successful in farming and mercantile pursuits, he was Sheriff of Monroe County, in 1805 and a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1810-13). In 1813, he was elected as a Federalist to the Thirteenth Congress, serving until 1815. After leaving Congress, he was again a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1826-30) and resumed his business interests until his death at age 65.
