World War II Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Fremantle, Australia, he served as a group Captain in the 105th Squadron, Royal Air Force. On July 4, 1941, Captain Edwards led 12 twin-engine bombers in a low-level attack on the heavily defended port of Bremen, Germany. The aircraft had to fly under high-tension wires, through a balloon barrage and into intense fire. Even with all his bombers being hit and four were shot down, he continued to lead his squadron against the target bombing the objective. For his gallantry and determination, he was awarded the Victoria Cross. After the war, he remained in the RAF and was Director of Establishments of the Air Ministry in London, before retiring in 1963. He also was Governor of Western Australia (1974–75) and appointed a Knight of Grace of the Order of St John. He died of a subdural hecatomb at the age of 68 in Sydney, Australia.
