Second Boer War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Bingham, Notts, he served as a Corporal in the 1st Battalion, Derbyshire Regiment, Mounted Infantry, British Army. Near Wakkerstroom, South Africa, on April 22, 1900, squadrons of Imperial Yeomanry and Mounted Infantry were forced to retire from their position being under a ridge strongly held by the enemy. During the retreat, Corporal Beet seeing a wounded comrade on the ground, went back, dragged him to cover and attended to his wounds. He remained with the wounded man and fought off the enemy under heavy fire. After darkness had set in, he stayed with his comrade until a Imperial Yeomanry doctor came with medics and took charge of the wounded man. For most prestigious gallantry, he was promoted Sergeant and awarded the Victoria Cross by H.R.H. the Duke of York on August 14, 1901. He emigrated to Canada 1936 and served as a Captain in the Canadian Expenditionary Forces during World War I. he died at the age of 72 in Vancouver, Canada.
