World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Rosehearty, Scotland, he served as a Lance Corporal in the Seaforth Highlanders, British Army. On November 17, 1917, during the Battle of Cambrai in France, Lance Corporal MacBeath volunteered to deal with enemy machine-gunners that held the advance of his unit and causing heavy casualties. On his own he single-handedly attacked a nest of German machine guns, captured 30 enemy soldiers and three officers. For most conspicuous bravery, he was promoted Sergeant and awarded the Victoria Cross on January 11, 1918. After the war, he emigrated to Vancouver, Canada, where he joined the Police Department. He was later shot and killed at age 23 while arresting a drunk motorist.
