U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He attended the University of Virginia, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1884 and commenced to practice law in Birmingham, Alabama. Entering politics, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fourth Congress and to the next nine succeeding Congresses, serving (1895-1915). Not seeking reelection, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving (1915-27). After leaving the Senate, he retired from politics and engaged in literary pursuits until his death from a stroke.
