U.S. Congressman. He studied law at Litchfield Law School Connecticut, was admitted to the bar in 1828 and commenced to practice law at Crown Point, New York. He was surrogate of Essex County, (1831-39) and elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth Congress, serving (1939-41). After leaving Congress, he was a member of the New York State Senate, (1844-47) and served as a associate justice of the New York State Supreme Court, (1847-55). After leaving politics, he practiced law until his death at age 74.
