He was a Clergyman and the principal of several schools. There is a memorial statue built in Elmira, New York were he spent a large portion of his life. He was a close friend of Mark Twain. He graduated from Illinois College in 1843.

Beecher received a call in 1854 from the Park Church in Elmira, New York to become their minister. He remained as pastor until his death.

He served during the Civil War as Chaplain of the 141st New York Volunteer Infantry.
