US Senator. The son of a prosperous farmer, he served in both the Continental Army and the Connecticut Militia during the Revolutionary War, enlisting at age 16 in what would become 19th Continental Infantry regiment. He fought in the August 1776 Battle of Long Island, then was prostrated by sickness that facilitated a medical discharge with the rank of Sergeant. In 1777 he served again briefly in the Connecticut Militia, but saw no action. After the war he became a successful merchant and landowner, and served in the Connecticut State Legislature and Senate. He was elected as a Democratic Republican from Connecticut to the United States Senate, and served from 1821 until his death in office in 1823.

He founded Boardman, Ohio and Medina, Ohio. There is a small plaque in the Medina town square in honor of him. His portrait was painted by Ralph Earl in 1789 and is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
