South Carolina Governor. He graduated from Yale University, from Harvard Law School, in 1863 and during the Civil War served as a Captain in the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry Regiment, Union Army. After the war, he moved to South Carolina, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Columbia. He was a member of the South Carolina Constitutional Convention of 1868 and served as South Carolina Attorney General, (1868-72). In 1874, he was elected as a Republican the 76th Governor of South Carolina, serving until 1877. As Governor, he implemented a number of reforms, including a reduction of public expenditures and curbing of the power of several state boards. After leaving office, he was a successful New York Wall Street attorney and a professor of Constitutional Law at Cornell University, (1883-97), when he retired. He died of cancer at age 71.
