Marshal of France. His initial service was in the Irish Legion where heg achieved the rank of lieutenant before it dissolved. His marriage In 1791, to Marie-Constance Soral de Montloisir (died 1797) produced two daughters. The following year he was promoted to captain and appointed an aide-de-camp to General Charles Dumouriez. Following the battle at Jempasses, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and then colonel four months later. By 1795, he was leading a brigade and aided in the capture of the Dutch fleet. He became governor of Rome in 1798 and participated in the Battles at Ferentino, Otricoli, Civita Castellana. By the following year, he with General Championnet conquered the Kingdom of Naples. When he returned to Paris, he married Felicité-Françoise de Montholon (died 1804) and was appointed ambassador to Denmark. After his dramatic success at Wagram against the Austrians, Napoleon appointed him a Marshall of France and a Duke of Taranto at Naples. He saw service in Spain in 1810 and later commanded the left wing of the army for the invasion of Russia with negative results including defeats at Katzbach, Liebertwolkwitz and Leipzig. He was one of the marshals sent by Napoleon to take notice of his abdication to Paris. He was later made a peer of France and in 1815 became a chancellor of the Legion of Honor. He was married to his third and final wife in 1821 and by 1830, he retired to his country home. Because his father came from the west of Scotland, in 2010, a plaque was installed at South Uist in Scotland, the familial home of the MacDonalds.
