US Senator. He graduated from Washington College in 1814, from William and Mary College, Williamsburg in 1815, moved to Pensacola, Florida, in 1820 and engaged in the lumber business. He was a member, Florida Legislative Council (1836-37), a delegate to the constitutional convention of Florida in 1838, US Navy agent at Pensacola, (1841-45) and the presidential elector on the Whig ticket in 1848. In 1849, he was elected as a Whig to the United States Senate, serving until 1855. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed his activities in the lumber business, was a deputy to the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States in 1861 and a member of the Confederate Congress (1862-65), during the Civil War. After his term, he again engaged in the lumber business until his death at age 80.
