Monegasque Prince. He was the first of the Grimaldi family to attribute to himself the title of Prince (1612) after having been seigneur of Monaco for eight years as a young regent. At the end of the oppressive Spanish influence (1633), he was finally able to be an independent ruler under the protection of France. His change of foreign policy caused a territorial upheaval for the Principality with the loss of possessions in Spain and Italy .King Louis XIII of France in the 1641 Treaty of Péronne made up the losses awarding Honoré rule over Menton and Roquebrune plus titles which were attached to further estates in France including: Duke de Valentinois, Marquis des Baux, Count de Carlades, Baron de Calvinet et du Buis, Seigneur de Saint Rémy. However the King Louis XIII's greatest bequest to Honoré II was his formal recognition as a "Prince étranger," or "foreign prince" which carried immense prestige at Versailles.
