Monegasque Nobility. The year of his installation as Lord of Monaco (1589) was characterized by turbid events aimed at the liberation from Spanish tyranny over the small principality and even by an attempted coup d'état aimed at overthrowing the Grimaldi family in favor of the House of Savoy. These events were the consequence of his policy linked to that of the Iberian state and which was hated by the middle and upper middle class of the place. The tragic end of these events was his violent death. Hercules of Monaco was in fact assassinated by means of numerous stab wounds. After his death, the successor Honorè managed to free himself from the Spanish influence by adhering to the expectations of the Monegasque population.
