Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was serving as a First Lieutenant in the 10th U.S. Infantry, at Peebles Farm, Virginia, on October 1, 1864, when he earned his Medal. His citation reads: "At the imminent risk of his own life, while his regiment was falling back before a superior force of the enemy, he dragged a wounded and helpless officer to the rear, thus saving him from death or capture." The Medal was awarded on December 12, 1898. Later in his career, he was attached to the U.S. Embassy in Berlin, Germany, 1892-93; commanded the 1st Division, 9th Army Corps, 1898; commanded the Western Column in the Puerto Rico Campaign (Spanish-American War); and was Chief of Staff in the Philippines in 1899-1900 (Philippine Insurrection) rising to the rank of Brigadier General.
