U.S. Senator. Born of French and Spanish descent, he served as an Ensign in Spain's Louisiana Regiment, commanded by his father. He was commissioner of the municipal council in 1800 and after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, he received American citizenship. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was Louisiana Territorial House of Representatives in 1806, Justice of the peace in New Orleans, 1807 and served on the committee on public defense during the British invasion, (1814-15). In 1824, he was elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Henry Johnson, serving until 1829. After his term, he practiced law until his death at age 59.
