Georgia Governor. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1877, studied law and established a legal firm in Newnan, Georgia. He was solicitor of Coweta County, (1879- 82) and was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives, (1886-94). In 1894, he was elected as a Democrat the 40th Governor of Georgia, serving 1896. In seat as Governor, public school funding increased also pensions for Confederate soldiers and the Georgia Normal and Industrial School in Milledgeville, was established. After his term, he retired from public service and continued to practice law until his death at age 44. Atkinson County, Georgia, is named in his honor.
