Indian Wars Medal of Honor recipient. Entered service in the US Army from Indianapolis, Indiana and served as a Corporal in Company L, 2nd U.S. Cavalry. He showed gallantry in action with hostile Sioux, at Little Muddy Creek, Montana on May 7, 1877. Having been wounded in the hip and was to unable to stand at Camas Meadows, Idaho, on August 29, 1877, he still continued to direct the men under his command until the enemy withdrew.

Originally buried at Fort Ellis, Bozeman MT
