Jacksonian Politician from Mississippi. He served as a delegate to Mississippi from 1807 to 1813. Also served in the House of Representatives from 1817 to 1819 and as Governor of Mississippi from 1819 to 1821. In 1830, he was appointed to the US Senate upon the death of Robert H. Adams and served until 1835.

Poindexter was married at least three times, the first to Lydia Williams in 1804, the second to Agatha Ball in 1816, and the third to Ann Hewes, daughter of Samuel Hewes, Esq. of Boston, MA, in 1832.
