US Senator. Moving with his parents to Tennessee, in 1797, he later served in the Creek War as private secretary to General Andrew Jackson, (1813-15). After the war, He graduated from Cumberland College, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1820 and proceeded to practice law in Nashville, Tennessee. He was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, (1829-31, 35-37). In 1838, he was appointed as a Whig to the U.S Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Felix Grundy, serving until 1839 and was reelected to the U.S Senate, serving (1843-45). After leaving the Senate, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 59.
