Alabama Governor. He attended Columbia University, studied law at the University of Virginia, was admitted to the bar in 1917 and practiced law in Birmingham, Alabama. During World War I, he served a Major with the French Escadrilles as an aerial observer. Dixon was wounded which resulted in the lost his right leg and was decorated with the Croix de Guerre with Palm by the French Government. After war, he founded his own law firm and was successful corporate lawyer. In 1939, he was elected as a Democrat the 40th Governor of Alabama, serving until 1943. As Governor, a State Civil Service System was established, teacher retirement was initiated, reorganized the state government and reformed the way property taxes were assessed. After his term, he returned to his law practice until his death at age 73.
