CSA Congressman. He attended Transylvania University Kentucky, studied law, was admitted to bar and began his legal practice at Wetumpka, Alabama, in 1853. He moved to Texas, in 1854, was a member of the Texas Senate, in 1857 and served as Texas Attorney General in 1858. At the advent of the Civil War, he was a delegate to the Texas Secession Convention and was elected a seat in the House of Representatives of the First Confederate Congress, serving (1862-64). In May 1864, Confederate President Jefferson Davis appointed him as a Colonel and judge advocate in the Confederate Army. After the war he moved to Montgomery, Alabama, continued the practice of law and was elected chairman of the executive committee of the Conservative Democratic Party in 1876.
